Day 4 - Around Accra with Joy

Today I went out with Joy on some of her business, and to meet some friends. First we visited Victor in his office, and it was a great time. Victor and I talked for over an hour about a variety of topics - politics, health, Ghana, America, Europe, Christianity, books, etc. Joy and I did a few other errands and saw some other people, and in-between we got some food for lunch at Shop-Rite and sat down to eat it at the food court in the mall. I had boiled eggs (the only gluten-free form of protein available) and chips (french fries) and bananas. Joy had chicken and chips. I had my first rides in the tro-tro's, which are mini-bus/van vehicles, roughly equivalent to motorized sardine-cans for humans. On the way home we took a round-about route, to avoid the traffic on the main road that Maria and I suffered through yesterday. Part of the "short-cut" was through a smoldering garbage dump. Weather was pretty warm and muggy. Lots of sweat and dirt to shower off after arriving home around 5:30 PM.

Speaking of showers, there is no hot running water, which works ok because the cool water is actually pretty refreshing. The first day here there was no running water at all, so I showered with a bucket using water from the reserve tanks they always maintain for just such occasions. The water was on by the next day, thank God. I've been eating lots of chicken, eggs, and rice. This evening I had fried fish and rice, for a nice change. I've found it necessary to drink lots of water, due to sweating so much from the heat. It's pretty warm, and definitely humid, but doesn't feel as hot as Villahermosa or La Paz. One pleasant thing about the weather is there's usually a nice breeze due to being not far from the ocean. And it's not a hot wind like some places.
